Event Details: |
Winner of the Boston Film Festival's "Mass Impact Award," the riveting film tells the story of the Soviet regime and its unspeakable crimes, such as the Great Famine in Ukraine, the Katyn massacre and the medical experiments in the Gulag. The film also describes the collaboration between Stalin's Soviet Union and Hitler's Nazi Germany up until the time Germany invaded the Soviet Union, a collaboration often ignored or forgotten. In 2008 the President of Latvia, Valdis Zatlers awarded the director of the film, Edvins Snore with the Order of the Three Stars.
Bryan Dawson, AHF Executive Chairman said, "The collapse of poorly regulated earthen reservoirs, a legacy of the Soviet occupation in Hungary, led to the worst ecological disaster in Hungarian history. Other communities live under the shadow of similar reservoirs and were unaware until the disaster occurred. These communities need help." AHF President, Frank Koszorus added, "Twenty years after the end of the Cold War some have forgotten the horrors of the other brutalism of the twentieth century and the similarity between Communism and Nazism. It's important for people, especially students, to see this film lest we forget that history whose devastating influence we still see today."
The tentative program includes: A wine reception co-sponsored by Gabor Garai, Honorary Consul General of Hungary in Boston; music by piano virtuoso Balint Varga from the Berklee College of Music; documentary short film on the disaster; brief remarks by Ambassador Karoly Dan, Consul General of Hungary in New York and Bryan Dawson, AHF Executive Chairman; and a silent auction. The American Hungarian Federation is an all-volunteer, 501(C)(3) non-profit, charitable organization. All donations may be tax-deductible. Please consult your financial advisor |
