This August and September, I spent six weeks in Ukraine visiting a range of community programs in cities, towns, and villages in and around lvano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, and Lviv. ~
As President of Ukrainian Charitable Platform (https://ukrainecharitable.org/ , the purpose of the 2024 trip (my third, since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion) was to observe a variety of programs supported by UCP through non-profit partner organizations Lviv-based Ukrainian Education Platform and Kyiv-based El eos-U kraine . Both organizations work through networks of local grassroots organizations throughout the country, serving the neediest, including internally displaced women and children (IDPs), traumatized victims of Russia's war. ~
This trip also provided an opportunity to meet with the 2024/2025 Boston Friends of UCU scholarship students at Ukrainian Catholic University's School of Public Management. ~
Ukraine is experiencing a massive displacement of its citizenry due to the Russian invasion, now in its 10 th year . According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), as of Dec. 2023, there were approximately 3.7 million /DPs in Ukraine (mostly women and children) and as of Oct. 2023, 6.2 Ukrainian refugees outside of Ukraine, or approximately 1/3 of the population. |
